OBCC Volunteer Roles
- Medical clinic helper- Volunteers can help our nurses and medical assistants in several ways. With training, they may call patients back, obtain heights and weights, clean exam rooms, and make sure vaccinations are documented appropriately.
- Dental clinic helper- Our dental clinic sees over 1,000 patients per month. With so much going on, the staff can really use a hand! This role would be particularly good for someone considering a career in dentistry or dental assisting.
- Reach Out and Read volunteer- ROR is a national program to improve children’s literacy. Each child who is seen at OBCC for a well visit leaves with a new book. Volunteers can help extend the program by reading to patients who are waiting to be seen (parents appreciate this!). Volunteers can also help organize and stock the books in our clinics.
- Fit for You- help teach children how to stay fit and eat healthy! OBCC sponsors swim lessons and cooking classes, and volunteers are needed to assist our nutritionist. These classes usually take place in the early evening hours
- Quality improvement projects- Volunteers can help by taking on specific questions and then searching the patient charts for this information. Recent project have included figuring out what percentage of children at OBCC are overweight and identifying children who should come in for allergy testing. This helps OBCC staff provide the best quality care to our patients. These projects are appropriate for college students, particularly those who are pre-med.
- General office helper- Do you have good organization skills? We need you! We always have tasks that a volunteer could help with. These could include organizing supplies, designing flyers or bulletin boards, filing medical charts, making new charts, sending letters, answering phones, etc. While these tasks are not glamorous, they are essential, and we greatly appreciate any volunteer willing to take them on.
- Skilled computer work- Are you an Access or Excel wizard? We keep many databases for our different programs. We could use help cleaning them up and making them work more efficiently. Please let us know if you have these skills and would like to put them to work.
- Special events- We occasionally need volunteers for special events, such as gift wrapping for the winter holidays.
Requirements- Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Some volunteer positions require volunteers to be at least 18 years old.
We schedule volunteers from 8:30am-5:30pm, M-F. We cannot accomodate volunteers on the weekends or weekday evenings. We ask that volunteers commit to at least 3 hours per week for at least two months (allowing for vacations and illnesses, of course). Volunteers must pass a WA State background check. They must also show proof of a TB test once every year. If volunteers cannot obtain this at their personal doctor’s office, we may be able to perform one at OBCC. Most importantly, volunteers must be committed to helping us maintain our mission- providing quality care with dignity for all of the families that we serve.

| "I have attended this clinic for about seven years and always encountered very good treatment. Whenever I need anything they have always responded to me immediately. The doctor who attends to my children is a person who speaks Spanish and that helps me a lot to be able to understand and ask all my doubts. I am very satisfied with your service. Thank you very much." (Translated from Spanish) |
